What is Privacy International?

A London-based human rights organization founded in 1990 that investigates and challenges government surveillance and corporate data exploitation worldwide — filing legal actions, publishing research, and advocating for privacy as a fundamental right.

Also known as: PI

Privacy International has been fighting for privacy rights since before the internet existed. They've challenged surveillance programs in courts worldwide and exposed the surveillance technology trade that governments use to spy on their citizens.

What They Do

Legal Challenges

  • Challenged GCHQ's bulk surveillance programs in the European Court of Human Rights (won — court ruled bulk interception violated human rights)
  • Filed cases against the Five Eyes intelligence sharing arrangements
  • Challenged data retention laws across Europe

Investigation & Research

  • Mapped the global surveillance industry — companies selling spyware, IMSI catchers, and interception equipment to authoritarian regimes
  • Documented how aid organizations share refugee data with governments
  • Investigated how period tracking apps share data with advertisers and law enforcement
  • Published research on surveillance in 131 countries

Advocacy

  • Lobbied for strong GDPR protections during the drafting process
  • Campaigns against facial recognition deployment
  • Works with UN Human Rights Council on digital privacy standards

Key Campaigns

  • Big Brother Inc. — Exposing companies that sell surveillance tech to dictatorships
  • Data exploitation — How companies turn personal data into profit
  • Government hacking — Challenging state-sponsored cyberattacks on citizens
  • ID systems — Investigating mandatory digital identity programs worldwide

Why They Matter

While the EFF focuses primarily on US digital rights, Privacy International operates globally — challenging surveillance in countries from the UK to Kenya, from India to Colombia. They've been instrumental in establishing privacy as a recognized international human right.
