What is Stylometry?
The statistical analysis of writing style to identify or verify the authorship of text, potentially de-anonymizing pseudonymous authors.
Stylometry can identify authors based on their writing patterns — word choice, sentence structure, punctuation habits, and more — even when they're trying to remain anonymous.
What It Analyzes
- Vocabulary richness and word frequency
- Sentence length distribution
- Punctuation patterns
- Use of function words (the, is, of, and)
- Grammatical structures
- Topic preferences and phrasing habits
Effectiveness
- Can distinguish between authors with >90% accuracy in many studies
- Works across languages and platforms
- Becomes more accurate with more text samples
- Machine learning has dramatically improved accuracy
Real-World Use
- J.K. Rowling was identified as the author of a pseudonymous novel through stylometric analysis
- Law enforcement uses it to link anonymous threat letters to suspects
- Intelligence agencies use it to identify anonymous bloggers and forum posters
Countermeasures
- Use AI to rewrite text in a different style
- Deliberately alter your writing patterns (very difficult to do consistently)
- Use translation round-tripping (translate to another language and back)
- Have someone else write for you
- Be aware that stylometry is a risk if you write pseudonymously
