What is Digital Sovereignty?

The ability of an individual, organization, or nation to control their own digital infrastructure, data, and online presence without dependence on foreign entities.

Digital sovereignty applies at every level — from nations controlling their internet infrastructure to individuals controlling their personal data.

For Nations

  • Control over internet infrastructure (not dependent on US tech companies)
  • Data localization requirements (citizen data stored domestically)
  • Independent technology development (EU pushing for tech sovereignty)
  • Resistance to foreign surveillance

For Individuals

  • Control over personal data (encryption, self-hosting)
  • Independence from Big Tech platforms (using alternatives)
  • Ability to communicate without corporate intermediaries (Signal, Matrix)
  • Financial independence (cryptocurrency, cash)
  • Identity independence (anonymous LLC, privacy domains)

How to Achieve Personal Digital Sovereignty

  1. Self-host where practical (email, cloud storage, password manager)
  2. Use E2EE so providers can't read your data even if compelled
  3. Diversify across providers and jurisdictions
  4. Own your domain — don't depend on someone else's platform for your online presence
  5. Control your identity — use an LLC, not your personal name, for public-facing activities
  6. Use privacy cryptocurrency for financial independence
