Smart, lightweight HTTPS for a more secure Firefox.
About
Boost Firefox security with automatic HTTPS upgrades. This lightweight add-on helps secure connections and defend against SSL-stripping for safer browsing.
Details
HTTPZ is a Firefox extension dedicated to bolstering your online privacy through **opportunistic encryption**. Its primary function is to automatically attempt to upgrade your web connections from insecure HTTP to the much safer HTTPS protocol. When you navigate to an HTTP address, HTTPZ intelligently tries to establish an HTTPS connection first. If this secure attempt encounters an error, the extension seamlessly reverts to the original HTTP address and, to avoid repeated issues, temporarily flags the site as insecure, bypassing HTTPS attempts for that host for seven days. This "Zmart" methodology ensures a **lightweight and unobtrusive** experience, prioritizing your privacy without disrupting your browsing flow.
The extension's commitment to user privacy is further underscored by its **open-source codebase**, available on GitHub, which allows for public scrutiny and verification of its security claims. HTTPZ also incorporates built-in safeguards against **SSL-stripping attacks**, a common threat that attempts to downgrade secure connections, thus offering a more robust defense than some alternatives. While it currently doesn't upgrade sub-requests on purely HTTP sites, its focus remains on providing a straightforward, configurable, and "fat-free" solution for prioritizing encrypted main connections. It is designed to integrate smoothly with other privacy-enhancing extensions, contributing to a more secure and hardened Firefox environment.
